Kids and TV

Let me start off with one confession....this has been a very long weekend at my house. It has been rainy and wet and a 4 day weekend. So we have been cooped up inside. Which leads to my next thought...am I a referee or a mother? Lately feeling more like a referee!

In a conversation between hubby and I we were discussing TV and our kids. We stated we hated they watched so much but at times, it is our only relief. (sad to admit). So in an effort to cut back on TV watching and lower cable costs, we decided we would cut back our cable to the very basic plan....Great idea right! If you only have a few channels (Disney not included) then they won't have such an interest.

So being proactive, I called Knology to discuss our options. Well, this is where it gets funny. I explained what I wanted and they said ok. We currently have a bundle package for home phone, cable and internet. They are offering a new customer package they were wiling to give me. Only saved about 20 bucks a month). So I asked for individual services for each and that total for very basic/local cable, home phone and high speed internet was MORE than what I am paying now- WHAT JUST HAPPENED HERE?

So my great idea completely backfired and I am at a loss on the whole cable thing- how can they do that?

So today, I see on a friend's FB page this link. The effects of TV on kids – brain development Health Nut www.healthnutblogger.com. Some of the things they list are things hubby and I discussed this weekend. Like more reading, getting more stuff done around the house, more games....

How do you limit TV for your kids? Would love some ideas from fellow readers.

  1. Meredith, if I remember correctly the first three didn't get to watch a lot of TV because I worked a lot, but also there wasn't as much on the TV then (first three are 28,26,24)and the last three didn't watch a lot because I ran a daycare center when they were young, as preteens they watched TV but were limited on week days and now they don't watch a lot, maybe before an hour or two before bed.OK sorry to go on ans on I found you on Make My Morning and am now following you on Google, please follow me back(if you want)on http://bridgetsdaughter5.blogspot.com

    1. Thanks for commenting Natalie. I am working on how to cut Tv in my house and encourage creative thinking and playing. I think many kids don't know how to "play" anymore. Us moms juggle many hats at one time. I am trying to build a business that improves other's life and has definatley made me a better mom because I feel so much better. So many tasks at hand and the easy thing to do is turn on tv. But working on that! Have a blessed day!

  2. My husband and I actually had this conversation about a month ago. We decided that we had our tv on way too much. We have decided that the kids get an hour of tv a day. It was hard at first because the kids were always asking to watch tv and would always be telling them no go play. Now they arent asking as much and there are even some days that the tv doesnt even come on. I think it helps with their relationships too. They arent consumed with tv but with working together. It also helps that our tv is old and is blinking every 2 seconds so once it finally quits turning on we arent buying a new one. Stopping by from the Make My Morning Blog hop. would love a follow back http://blessedchick-trythis.blogspot.com

    1. I have heard several people giving certain times a day to watch TV for kids. I am not really a TV watcher myself. It may be on but lately I have a hard time with all the "noise" between the tv, kids and so forth. Thanks for commenting and I signed up as a follower for you too!

  3. Meredith,
Thank you for sharing my article. I'm sorry about all the frustration you have endured with your cable company. I wonder if Netflix would be a better fit for you and your family. My best friend downloads programs and movies directly from her computer and plays them on her TV.
